Learn Kaqchikel Mayan on your summer vacation!

Wuqu’ Kawoq | Maya Health Alliance, in coordination with the University of Maryland Language Science Center, hosts an intensive Kaqchikel language class and mentored research in highland Guatemala. Experienced Kaqchikel-speaking teachers plan the content and lessons for each class. Students work intensively with the teachers for eight hours a day in immersive language-learning activities and one-on-one instruction.

The field school lasts for two weeks and all students stay with Kaqchikel families to continue their language learning into the evening and experience everyday life in Guatemala. The mentored research also last for two weeks, in which students conduct their own research on Mayan languages of their choice under the supervision of Faculty members from the University of Maryland.

In addition to classes and research, students have the opportunity to visit sites during the weekends, especially the different projects that Wuqu’ Kawoq runs in the Kaqchikel area. The field school will be of particular interest to NGO and health workers, linguists, and social scientists. To learn more, please contact: lsc@umd.edu.
