This past Friday, Wuqu’ Kawoq completed the first round of classes for women in sexual health and family planning with our group from an aldea outside of San Pedro, Sacatapéquez. This education program started in January 2011 and is a series of 5 classes, one class every 2 weeks, including 6 themes in sexual health and family planning. The themes include: knowing your body and your rights, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, menopause, and family planning/contraception. The women’s health program consists of 2 parts, including these classes and clinical support for STI testing and treatment, contraceptive provision, and family planning consultation. Many of the women in this class were able to attend our clinic in Santiago for papanicolaou exams and STI screening and treatment, and we found that 25% of the women who attended the clinic had sexually transmitted infections or precancerous cervical exams in need of immediate treatment. During this clinic we truly realized the need for sexual health education and clinical services.
