Yesterday Wuqu’ Kawoq met with the Comunidad Lingüística Kaqchikel (CL Kaqchikel), the governing body of the Kaqchikel language, to sign an agreement between the two organizations to develop 3000 neologisms (new words) in the critical areas of healthcare and technology.
Comunidad Lingüística Kaqchikel will provide two linguists, as well as other technical and financial support. Wuqu’ Kawoq, with the help of grants from PYM and the University of Kansas, will provide most of the financial support, as well as some technical expertise.
The two organizations met in Boko’ (Chimaltenango), Guatemala, at the offices of CL Kaqchikel to finalize the details of the project, which will start on the first of February. After making a few last minute changes to the agreement, mostly concerning the standardization of diabetes terminology for training community health promoters, the final document was signed and sealed by the presidents.
Even as the ink was drying, the two groups were already discussing ideas for future collaborations. Wuqu’ Kawoq was founded with a focus on both language and medicine. Today’s meeting represents the start of its first major language revitalization project. It made us happy that the meeting wasn’t over before we were already sharing ideas for a second and third.
